3 WTF WIKI's
Week 4
1. Glitter
Can you believe in the years 1989-2009 it is estimated there was the production of over 10 million pounds of glitter? Did you know that plastic glitter takes about 1,000 years to decompose? How about the fact that some bits of glitter are categorized as a microplastic? Did you know some of these shiny bits have been shown to be a hormone disruptor which affect fertility, cognitive brain function, and cause all kinds of imbalances in the body? Kind of ironic considering how idols in the 80’s like Bowie and Iggy Pop used glitter to introduce a more feminine trait to the male culture, blurring lines between male and female sex. In the UK there has been a ban on microplastics which has slowed the sale of glitter but it’s still very likely to be widely used.
The ancients made glitter-like material out of crushed beetles and mineral powder. Modern glitter was made from large sheets of plastic that were recovered from the dump.
2. Starfish Prime
So everybody knows that Bikini Bottom from Spongebob Squarepants is the site of the first nuclear bomb tests right? The “Bikini Atoll” is a region of islands all surrounding a deep lagoon and was the site of 77 nuclear bomb tests by America in the 40’s and 50’s.
Well just about five years after the series of “operations” at the Bikini Bottom, in an area not too far away there were a series of tests as a part of the “Fishbowl” op. Over 240 of tests consisted of “high-altitude bomb detonations.” Some of these were atomic, some were hydrogen, creating “fireballs” high into Earth’s atmosphere. There are writings that we were trying to detonate bombs in outer space.
One of these operations, “Starfish Prime” detonated one of the largest bombs ever tested 250 miles above sea level. It pumped enough radiation into the Van Allen belts to damage 7 satellites that were in orbit. The failed “Starfish” project was forced to blow up prematurely and contaminated nearby islands with Plutonium. The estimated death outcome of these series of tests are anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000.
"At Johnston Island, there was an intense white flash. Even with high-density goggles, the burst was too bright to view, even for a few seconds. A distinct thermal pulse was felt on bare skin. A yellow-orange disc was formed, and transformed itself into a purple doughnut. A glowing purple cloud was faintly visible for a few minutes."
3. Jimmy Savile
Think about, “What if Epstein was one of America’s most loved celebrities?” All the child trafficking, celebrity parties, politician handshakes.. Without getting too much into the details of abuse, this BBC media star was publicly accused of child abuse a whole year AFTER he died in 2011. He was all over UK tv’s for about 30 years starting in 1964 and was the host of many shows but was most known for his “Jim’ll Fix It” series where he usually took a letter sent from a young fan where they confided in an issue they were having. This is where Jimmy would go out of his way, and create a façade for the young fan and deliver a gift himself for all his adoring viewers to see at home. All of Jimmy’s shows were centered around topics that were most popular with young fans. He became so influential at some point, with the help of the BBC they opened child centers and hospitals.. some of which were for disabled children. Posthumously, there have been over 450 different counts of SA by Jimmy Savile. Mostly girls, but not specifically. The ages ranged from as low as 5 to as elderly as 75. It has surfaced that the BBC would edit entire sections of interviews out on talk shows where a celebrity would publicly denounce Savile. Just makes you sick how someone that is so publicly loved and outwardly gracious is actually using those images to sheathe their true selves from society. And how once a person has that much momentum behind them there are forces which can protect the person from serious allegations if needed. Makes you tread a little more carefully when thinking around people like Mr. Beast or social media influencers.
Jimmy died an old man in his home, he survived all the allegations that were surrounding his name. This is truly one of the darkest stories I have heard about involving children and it’s so terrifying to think how it all happened in the face of everyone (in the UK) I don’t know if I am gonna keep including goofballs like this in the series. My brother asked me why I choose to know this type of stuff, I just think it’s so insane how easily people have been able to get away with all this crazy shit for so long. It helps me recognize these doofuses when I see them in real life cause I don’t know if its the family I come from but I truly think there’s more of these creeps around than makes me comfortable.
